Video Playback / Recording Devices

Help - I accidentally set my Sony GX300 DVD recorder to use the VCR Plus system for recording programs. I always had it set so I entered the time, channel, etc. I don't want to use  the VCR Plus system but I can't undo it. I've tried going back to the factory settings, but it is still on VCR Plus. Can anybody answer this for me?

Other than lack of NFL Sunday Ticket (which I don't subscribe to) I don't see huge downsides to Dish Network these days.

What's everyones feedback on this? I got a chance to change the carrier so I'd like to make the proper call. 

I have a dvd/vcr combo machine.  When I play dvd's, the image sort of pauses and skips and  blocks or squares of colors appear.  Eventually it subsides and the movie resumes.  Any ideas?
