RCA remote interference

I have an RCA home Theater package (upconverting DVD & Surround) that i have hooked up to my RCA LCD tv. Both items were purchased brand new less than 2 months ago. The problem that i am having is that the remotes seem to interfere with each other. When i turn the tv on, the DVD player comes on also. Also, while using the DVD remote, if i push the left or right arrows to scroll through DVD menus or try to switch my surround and subwoofer settings, the TV will change inputs or will try to enter an odd channel like 7704.44 for instance. Also I tried to program my DirecTV remote to control both items, but the codes for the remotes must overlap, because the same thing happens as mentioned before. Now is this just a common occurance with same brand items? Can i return the DVD player to get the same thing with a different code/frequency? Is there any settings i can use to fix this? Any help would be greatly appreciated, I tried calling tech support, but we all know that alls they tell you to do is un-plug it and that should fix it. Thanks for your help.
