i was watching tv when it just shut off and started making a high pitched squeal (not thru the speakers) the only way i could stop this was to unplug the tv. it will not turn back on. just makes the squeal noise. has been a great tv till this point. it is about 6 yrs old.
RCA 36"
model# F36668
chassis# CTC203CA5
what could the problem be and is it something i can fix myself?
a little backround of myself
I can solder, never worked on a tv but have worked on other electronic devices (fixed a ps2 read error problem, added rca plugs to an old record, cassette player and other simple tasks) I also build and work on computers.
Hot is shorted Q14401 replace it also Resolder L14401,
thank you, should i also be testing other parts to find the cause of the problem
like maybe the power supply? or anything else.
Yes first thing is to check the Horizontal output tansistor for a short as Silva has satated, But alot of times, the flyback transformer is bad also. The thing with the coil, L4401 is that if you just resolder the coil, Thats the small coil between the base lead of the horizontal output transistor and the secondary side of the horizontal driver transformer, You wil have the same problem in a few months down the road. What RCA oir lets say Thompson corp who owns RCA now ( I know is this not the norm? LOL) Says to simply remove the coil(the L4101) and scrap off a little of the enamal that is still on the ends, and reinstall this coil, and all should be OK. Good luck and please let us all know how nyou made out with this repair.
thanks for the help, i will let you know the outcome.

Rod, first off, please do not post here or on any site with the caps button on and all in capital letters. It is concidered shouting and is very rude to post like this. This should be known to all by now. That said, the high pitch cricket noise is the power supply trying to start up inside the set, but cannot because of a short. It could be the horizontal output transistor, the flyback transformer, or just about anything in the sweep supply , including the vertical output IC. This set needs to be servoced by a reliable authorized repair shop. Good Luck, and let us know how you made out with this repair.
