help ? advice on older big screen tv

Hi

I have an older big screen that I adore..however in the last couple of years, I lost stations, channels 2,4,5 then 7 and now sometimes 11.  I assumed the tv was slowly dying.  However, I'm now thinking, how could so many other stations 3,8, 10 13, cable stations.. come in so very well, if the tv itself was dying.??

If the tv was dying would I even get these ?  Anybody know?

Do you think it is the cable?  I have tried to determine if the connection s behind the tv and outside the house  are good and they seem to be.

can't afford a new one yet and have made the mistake before with other appliences thinking they were done before their time.

The problem is not the tv

The problem is not the tv tuner, is the cable frequences are not compatible with those of the tv tuner, you can get a cable box and use normaly is channel 3 and control the cable box tuner that'll do the job. my self have a whole bunch of set that if i used them straight from outside ant from some new stations or straight from cable   get almost no channels because frequences are too high.

The loss of stations is a sign that either the tuner is starting to fail or that there could be a problem in the power supply.  Different channels are selected by varying the voltage levels in the tuner.  This repair should be done by an experienced tech as specialized equipment will be required.

Silva,  Your answer makes me

Silva,  Your answer makes me feel that the frequencies of the new cable service is too advanced for my older set?    ..  Still, you have given me hope, I think...   How would I get a cable box? Is it something I can buy somplace....   or JUST from the cable company

The way I have cable now is.. I'm in a 1 family house.. &  my neice on the top floor is subscribed to a cable service..  and I connected my first floor with the outside splitter.
Thank you Silva

Dave,, thank you.

Dave,, thank you.

SO, A tuner can be starting to fail and still show so many good quality channels?   Next  In order to determine the problem, , is the 'power supply' possibility something I could check myself?  before callling a tech...   If it is a tuner thing, I'd imagine there will be a minimum cost just to have them look at it, (a replacement tuner for a 1988 Panasonic sounds pricey??)

what do you think that maybe the cable frequencie are not compatible as Silva suggested?
