Connecting Panasonic DVD recorder to DVR box

I have a DVR box through our local cable company. I just got a Panasonic DMRES35V DVD recorder. We hooked it up the way it says to but we cannot get the DVR content to play where we can record it. Is there a special way to connect the boxs to the TV or do I need another cord. Any help would be much appreciated.
