I have a Philips TV model # 24RF505141 and a Philips Digital Video Disc Player & Video Cassette Recorder model # DVD740VR25.
I bought both units in the same brand thinking they would be easy to work together. Not so.
I can get DVDs to play on the TV but when I put in a VHS Tape it plays on the TV for about 3 seconds and then the DVD/VHS player turns off. If you turn it back on and try to play the VHS tape again, it ejects the VHS tape.
I've been through the settup and troubleshooting guide many times with no help.
I've called Philips and got the usual "Don't know - Don't care" response. After wasting 40 minutes on the phone with a woman who demanded lots of personal information and marketing data for THEIR benefit she proceeded to read the same settup and troubleshooting information from her computer or manual - the same stuff I had already been through before calling. In the end she had the gall to recommend as my "solution" that I go out and purchase another Philips DVD/VHS player! Unbelievable - even in this day and age of zero customer care/customer service.
I know there must be some kind of timer/shutoff switch in the player that is causing it to stop and eject any tape I put in, but I can't find anyone who knows anything about the equipment and can help.
Also, I bought one of those big button universal remotes to use with my Philips TV and it doesn't work with that TV. It works perfectly with my Sony TV and my Toshiba TV but not with the Philips - even though it accepts the code and does everything correctly, when I'm done with the remote settup procedure it does not control the Philips TV at all.
Can anyone help? Or can anyone direct me to someone at Philips who actually knows something about the products they sell?
Until now I've been a loyal Philips consumer. Besides their TV and DVD/VHS tape player I have their SoniCare toothbrushes for everyone in my family; I have their Senseo coffeemaker; their MP3 player, their cordless phone and several other products. But after this experience I'm going back to Sony or Toshiba.
There is a problem with the VCR section of the player. If this is a new unit, return it as not wokring properly. It should be covered under warrantee. The problem is not one of compatability at all. The VCR is not working. There are a number of safety checks performed at all times while the unit is working. It sounds like the tape is not moving through the machine correctly. Once this is detected, the machine will shutdown to prevent damage to the tape. From a repair standpoint, it could be something as simple as a belt slipping, or a sensor bad to a problem with the transport itself. Send it back. Don't use this a the only example of quality as things can happen. The store will most likely exchange the unit for you and that should be the end of it. Keep us posted.

Thanks. I'll give it to Goodwill and buy a Sony. I bought it too long ago to take it back to Costco.
I've just been using it as a DVD player and my Sony TV in another room as the tape player since it has one built in.
I always assumed I had hooked it up wrong and when I had the time I'd go through the manual carefully and be able to make it work.
What I want this time is a DVD/VHS machine that will play and record DVDs and tapes.
Any recommendations for a good machine?
