RCA RT2500

My components are:

Receiver: RCA RT2500 Home Theatre 5.1 Dolby DTS

DVD: RCA RC5240P

TV: Sharp 36U-F510

I'm
using red, white and yellow plugs.  I have no idea if they're
called analog or coaxial (and have no idea which to choose when setting
the receiver - I've tried both).  The plugs came with the whole
unit and I may have purchased additional at Radio Shack, so I guess
these are just normal plugs.

Problem:

When
I connect the DVD straight to the TV, bypassing the receiver,
everything works and sound comes out of the TV (having to change to
TV's input connections).

But when I connect the DVD to the
Receiver and the receiver's TV connection to the TV's input video and
output audio, I get no TV picture and get no sound through
speakers.  Nothing that I try gets me picture or surround sound
through 5.1 speakers.  Tonight, after two days of messing with
this, I'm getting red and blue snow.  I think this is because I
went into the TV menu and changed some setting a bit differently than I
had them.  I've tried all setting every which way.

I'd
like for everything to run through the receiver so that I can utilize
the surround sound like I did when my boss bought this for me more than
five years ago for Christmas.  (I haven't used it much at all and
have no idea when it stopped working.)

Any ideas of what to do next?

The
receiver responds to the remote control seemingly correctly. I've read
the entire receiver's manual and the DVD manual and have gone through
the menu setup and everything seems to be fine; although, I had to
bypass the receiver once again to even get the DVD menu to come up.

Thanks

Tina
