TV turns off

I have a 32" G.E. television that has started to turns itself off randomly.  The timer is not on.  After a wait time, maybe 15 minutes or so I, can turn it back on.  Otherwise it is a great TV, about 8 years old.

Any thoughts???

Sounds like the typical cold

Sounds like the typical cold solder connections around the Flyback transformer, or the horizontal sweep circuit of this set.

I spoke with a local technician that quoted $180 to take the 'insides' out and repair the TV at his shop.  Does this sound  reasonable? I'm not sure if I could get it to a shop on my own.   The other thought is that my brother repairs computers -could he deal with this?

If your brother is familar

If your brother is familar with the HIgh voltage inside the TV set and knows all the HIGH VOLTAGE saftey issues, he should be able to troubleshoot this set.  but would it be worth it to you or him as you would need to buy the service manual And most likly a scope to test the circuits.  ask and see how comfortable he is with repairing TV sets as they are two differant monsters.Undecided
