For those of you who own one, what are your opinions of it? Besides the fact they haven't released software version 6.2 for it, I have noticed some other shortcomings.
- Lack of zoom mode: Sure, it has a "full" mode that stretches the picture horizontally, but a zoom feature would be good for letterbox movies on SD channels. In such cases, not only are there black bars on the top and bottom, but there are also bars on the left and right. TV's such as mine will not zoom the picture if the signal is 480p or 1080i.
- Picture breakup between scenes: I noticed that sometimes there is a momentary herring-bone pattern between certain scenes, commercials, etc. It's only for a fraction of a second, but it is noticeable.
- Sound dropouts/stuttering: This happens especially when watching movies such as Batman Begins on HBO-HD. My wife even comments on this.
I'm not particulary happy with the HD picture quality on DirecTV. It's not the receiver's fault; it's DirecTV's ever-increasing compression to get more stuff in. OTA channels look much better than DirecTV channels. "CSI:Miami" looks gorgeous using the OTA tuner.
