Problems viewing DVD-R in DVD Player

I have recently purchased a Sony DVD/CD Rewritable Drive for my computer as well as a Sony CD/DVD Player for my television. I am using Nero to burn my .avi files to DVds so that I can play them on the television. Now everything appears to work just fine--the DVD burns and plays on the player. Picture looks great, sound is great, etc. However, these are anime files with embedded subtitles and half of the subtitles are being cut off at the bottom. Since I don't speak Japanese, it is pretty important that we be able to read these subtitles. I tried playing around with the aspect ratio, but that didn't seem to do anything. Should I burn them a different way or try to set the DVD player up in a different way or both? The manuals for both Nero and the DVD player are pretty vague on this. Thanks for any advice you can give!
