Green and red bars scrolling from bottom to top

I have a new front projector (In-Focus SP5000) connected to a DVD player and an HD cable box. I use a 50ft. length of Component video cable to connect the 2 components and the picture started to display red and green horizontal bars that scroll from bottom to top. There is only one of each [red & green bars] and they're approx. 1" in thickness.
Here comes the strange part, i moved the dvd player closer to the projector to swap out the component cable for a shorter one, bars went away, reconnected the 50ft. comp. cable with the dvd player still next to the projector bars still not displayed. Finally moved everything back, and surprise, bars came back.
What could be the problem? My initial reaction is a faulty cable, but I not sure. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

I figured it out, it was the cable box! It is transmitting unusual interference of some sort. Apparently even if it is not the source you are watching it will still display those bars on the screen, as long as it is in the signal chain, i.e. connected to a A/V reciever utilizing component video switching.

That's weird. How did you end up fixing the problem and get rid of the interference from the cable box?

I didn't yet. If I want to watch DVD's I disconnect the cable box. I also plan on using DVI as soon as i get an adapter for the projector, hopefully going all digital will remedy the problem. If not, time to call the cable guy.

I connected the projector via a DVI cable and the bars went away. The real problem seems to be a D/A conversion issue. It didn't like getting converted to RGB cable to the projector. I have a video scaler (DVDO iScan HD) that converted component vid to RGB just so I could get things up and running.
