To steal some of the thunder from Microsoft's announcement of the XBOX 360, Sony has revealed the Playstation 3 to the general public. Included in this announcement were many of the system specs.
The important ones
-3.2GHz Cell processor (like 8 little processors in one.)
-256MB XDR Main RAM (3.2Ghz)
-256MHz GDDR3 VRAM (700Mhz)
-2 Teraflops total system floating point performance
-Bluetooth Controllers
-Gigabit Ethernet built in
-High Def games x2 channels
-Built in WiFi for PSP
-Blu-Ray disc drive
Overall, it looks really impressive. Based on floating point performance, it can process twice the amount of data as the XBOX 360, not to mention that Blu-Ray discs hold 6 times more data.
This sounds a little like overkill to me - I've already mentioned how I don't buy the necessity for nextgen optical media, but GIGABIT Ethernet built in? COME ON! That's over the top for a game console.
I agree with you Ross, it's definately overkill. But, if you look at it from the viewpoint of how long the system is going to be in the market, and the cost difference between 100 and 1000 bit ethernet, it seems like a good move. The cost difference between the two was probably so little, why not?
>> Built in WiFi for PSP
What does wireless connectivity to the PSP give me? The ability to play a network game against someone on the PS/3?
Not sure what the WiFi is for yet, but wouldn't it be sweet if you could pipe your PSP game through your PS3 and play on your TV screen. That would be soooo sweet.
PS3 is going to be awesome, and tie guy your icon is awesome, totally a fan of quagmire. gigidy, gigidy, gigdy, gone!
Thanks bigross.
"Hello, 911? It's Quagmire. Yeah, it's caught in the window this time."
