Product Review: LG DP889 Portable DVD Player

While on a family vacation to Disney World recently, I realized how bad the battery in my laptop had gotten—it would only work for about an hour of DVD watching, so I explored some portable power options. I found a few, but none that added more than a half hour to a laptop's battery time. Discouraged, I said "WTH" and looked at portable DVD players. I found a unique one listed on Circuit City's web site, so I had to get it - the LG DP889 "Portable DVD Player & Digital Photo Frame" (8" widescreen; $229, but I saved some with a 10% coupon). Instead of a lengthy discussion, a list of positives and negatives would be better:

Sony's Redesigned PSP Underwhelms

The PSP train wreck continues for Sony. I've said it before (and I'll say it again), the PSP is successful when viewed only by the number of hardware units sold. When viewed from any other perspective, be it software sales, UMD movies, music, video, and pure customer satisfaction, it's a flop.

So what do you do when something is broken? You fix it, right? That's just what Sony tried to do. However, the latest series of hardware fixes in this "newly designed" PSP doesn't address what wasn't working for the flailing handheld in the first place.

The Demise of Sony's PSP

Not long ago, everyone was excited about Sony’s PSP. Why shouldn’t we have been? It’s by far the most technologically advanced handheld device that has ever been conceived. It plays games, music, and movies, and even surfs the Internet when connected to a Wi-Fi hotspot. It’s a very versatile handheld device, one that could have been the biggest thing since sliced bread.

DS Lite - fun new handheld

The nintendo DS has just undergone an overhaul. Now we have the DS lite, which is lighter weight, and brigheter than the previous model. It is a comfortable fit in your hands, closes to protect the screen, has decent sound which can be connected to headphones or speakers. It plays the two most recent formats of nintendo games, and boasts built in wireless capability so that you can play with your friends, or you can set it up to work over a wireless network and play over the Internet.

From the current games, I have nintendogs (lab and friends) and brain age, both of which I really like. This is a great hand held system, very affordable compared to the psp. I love the touch screen, and the microphone voice recognition.

My CD Player Put Me on Hold!

A TechLore "Ask the Experts" Question...

Question:

I have a portable Sony CD player (D-EJ119), and when I press play the LCD screen just flashes the word hold. Nothing happens, and I can't hear any music. Any ideas?
