panasonic cordless phone w/answering machine kx-tg5631s

i cant get the handset to work and i changed the battery,it seems like the buttons (keys) arent activating,the answering machine works but anything that functions from the hanset will not activate ie. speakerphone,numbers,call on or off.Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.
