Bass/sound effects are loud but dialogue/voice are quiet

I've had this problem with all my home theater systems. Whenever I play a DVD I turn up the volume and the sound effects are loud but I can barely hear the voices. Because of this I constantly am turning the volume up and down. Is there a way to turn up the volume of the dialogue and still be able to have the room shake? This has been frustrating me for a year or so; any input is appreciated!

Assuming you have a Dolby D.

Assuming you have a Dolby D. reciever,
Here are a few things to check:
1. check the surround mode on the reciever. Some modes are better suited for music and such.
2. check indvidual channel volumes, all Dolby D. recievers have seperate vol. controls for individual speakers, maybe your center channel is askew. Running the test tone is the easiest method.
3. Less likely, but worth checking is your speaker wiring, make sure polarity matches i.e. black to black, red to red.
Check the DVD player as well. There are features on some players that could interfere with the reciever processing.
