Editing DVD-RW after downloading from camera

Newbie looking for tutorial on editing,deleting,saving data on Sylvania DEV recorder w/VC recorder. Using DVD-RW disks. Manual not very clear. I've tried using START, then STOP where I thought data would be cut and wind up losing all my data sometimes, and some of the data other times. Would like to learn how to keep it altogether. Thanks
