Zenith TV SLS1917S -Turn power off and sound stays on??

I have a Zenith TV SLS1917S.When I turn power off with the remote or on/off switch, the picture goes off but the sound stays on. I have to pull the plug to kill it. Any help would be appreciated. I have no schematic.

The problem you have is

The problem you have is generally the other way around where the sound goes off at power turn off but the picture stays.  That would be a stuck main relay.  After looking at my notes, its seems I have ran into this problem once before.  It turned out to be a switching transisot for a power supply that feeds the IF circuit and the audio circuit.  I replaced the entire module back then as that was protocol with Authorized Zenith service.  I am sorry, I do not have a service manual or schematic for this one, but I did see it available at http://www.servicemanual.net.  I also found out that the entire module is available for this set at The Parts Store.  There addy is http://www.partstore.com  I'm not sure if you wanted to spend this much on this set, but I doubt you will find individual zenith componets available.  You can sub most of these parts unless it turns out to be a microprocessor or something like that.  Good Luck and please get back to us and let us know if you fixed it and what you did to get it working.

You said you found out that

You said you found out that the entire module is available for this set at The Parts Store. What module (part number is it?). I'll try and isolate it to the bad part if the module is too expensive.

Thanks for the info!

Sorry ssgbdlc,  I just found

Sorry ssgbdlc,  I just found out the info on the website was wrong and the module part number 9-1244 is no longer available there at the partstore.  It is available at http://www.ptscorp.com for about 100 bucks.  Let us know how you made out.

We too have the same problem

We too have the same problem with our Zenith.

Were you able to resolve yours?  Not sure if it's worth spending much to get this problem fixed.

Would there be any concerns if we allowed it to continue this way?  I worry about the possiblity of it overheating and causing a fire; is this warranted?

no. I just put a lamp cord in

no. I just put a lamp cord in-line switch in and use it to turn the tv on and off. Cheap solution.

Yes that will work but not

Yes that will work but not really a fix but a solution to sub a fix. Not a bad idea, but soon the set will not start up.

Replacing the set is a better

Replacing the set is a better option than investing in repairs. That's why I chose the lamp cord fix. When the set does'nt start up any more I can will replace it with an HDTV set. In the mean time it still works.

No problem. I didn't think

No problem. I didn't think you were. Just wanted to clarify why I chose to  go that route. Have a Happy New Year!
