Understanding Sony Television Blinking Codes

Many of the later model Sony TV’s have a built in self-diagnosis function. If the timer/standby indicator is blinking, this could be an indication of a problem with the unit. The diagnostic blinking will occur automatically with no action required by you to engage it.

The timing of the blinking you see would be as follows: two to nine blinks, (depending on the fault), about a third of a second apart, then a pause for 3 seconds, then the two to nine blinks about a third of a second apart again.

Here is a list of the problems that might have occurred indicated by the number of blinks. The words in parentheses are those, which you will see for each of these faults on a diagnosis screen described later in this article.

  • Unit is dead, No blinks - Problem in the standby power section. Might check fuse, R607, Q601, IC601, R612 and VDR601 (should show open).
  • Continuous blink once a second, no pausing - No reply from the jungle IC301 (data bus is busy, shorted to ground, or held high), IK video path is defective.
  • One blink - not used for the self-diagnosis
  • Two blinks - B+ over current protection (OCP), unit goes to the standby mode then displays the 2 blink fault. Could be a short in the power supply of any of the circuits.
  • Three blinks - B+ over voltage protection (OVP), unit goes to the standby mode then displays the 3 blink fault. This is also a problem in the power supply circuit, check T603 and R672.
  • Four blinks - No vertical Deflection (V STOP), Screen goes to a single horizontal line then the video signal muted. Check IC1509, Q1505
  • Five blinks - AKB circuit (automatic kine bias), the timer/standby indicator blinks for about 30 seconds then goes to the self-diagnosis function. Something is wrong with the video. Check video out, Q705, 732, 761 and other components on the C board, also check Q218, 219, 220 on the A board. In addition, unit could be in IK blanking, try turning up screen slightly.
  • Six blinks - No Horizontal (H STOP), no raster, goes to the blinking self-diagnosis function immediately. Check C515 & 516 and the jungle IC, IC206.
  • Seven blinks - High voltage shutdown. The high voltage has exceeded 33k and the unit goes immediately into safety shutdown. Check power supply regulation and horizontal circuits.
  • Eight blinks - Problem with the audio (AUDIO), unit goes to standby and blinks the self-diagnosis code. Check IC406 audio amp, PS401, and 402. On some projection models of Sony TV sets, this code means that T8005 (flyback transformer), or the associative components in the high voltage circuits are defective on the D board.

  • Nine blinks - Replace D 6116 and D 6301 on the "G" board, do not resolder as this will fix the problem temporary. Or Panel Module Error or Thermal Error. If it is intermittent 9 blinks, meaning sometimes the TV comes on and other times you get flashing, then change the switching regulator on the "G" board or check connections. Make sure the regulator is -12 or -13 (negitive).
  • Ten blinks - Check Q8014 and Q8013 for shorts, leakage, or bad solder connections on the " D" board. If the transistors are bad, check R8051 and IC8005, also on the "D" board.

Intermittent problems? This is a great feature. You can also bring up these fault codes on-screen to see a list of the problem numbers with the abbreviation of the problem and the number of times this problem has occurred. This is slightly different than entering the service mode. To see the diagnostic screen, press the following buttons: Display, Channel, 5, volume Minus, ( not plus ) then Power. This brings up a screen with a list of the problems and number of times they have occurred. Each of the problems named, are abbreviated as, "OCP", "OVP", "V STOP", ETC. We have repeated them in parentheses in the text for the "Blinks" described above so you can correlate between the diagnostic screen and the blink codes.

Now that you know about these self-diagnostics, how do you use them? Say that you have a set with a black screen. You see that the LED is blinking four times. This would tell you that you have no vertical sweep, which is why the video is muted. If it was blinking 6 times, you would know that you have a horizontal fault. It's not a sure cure..

IMPORTANT: After you repair the unit, you MUST clear the values on this diagnostic screen. These codes do not reset themselves after the fault is corrected, so if you don't clear them, you'll be seeing "old" fault codes the next time you enter this screen. Clearing is done by going into the service mode (display, channel, 5, volume plus, then power ). Press 8 and Enter, which returns everything to the factory preset condition.

You have a flat panel, i will have to double check the blink code with the manual when i get to work. The blink codes listed here do not match your tv. I believe what you have is a bad panel but let me check. Here is what I believe you have now: If this is a ccfl type of flat panel which I think this one is will know after looking at manual. One of the bulbs is out. If only one bulb burns out the balancer will sense this error and shut down the set. But Sony has shifted this code around allot and I need to look at the manual to be sure. Traditionally this means that the panel is bad and the tv cannot be repaired. China does not offer replacement bulbs they condemn the panel. This is a frustration point with me. They do this on allot of parts they are forcing us to a throwaway society. But if this is what I suspect than there is something you may be able to do. It is risky and most shops will tote the company line and condemn the panel. But I have replaced a defective bulb before, there is great risk in damaging the panel when you do this but it is possible. There is a place called ccfl wherehouse that manufactures bulbs here in America. http://www.ccflwarehouse.com/ They have been cataloging and making their own business on trying to offer replacement bulbs. They are very helpful. The only problem I have had with them is that the replacement bulbs are not the same color tempiture witch causes white balance issues on the screen. But I found if you move one of the original bulbs at the top or bottom to the burned out bulb location and put the new bulb at the edge this makes the effect minimal and not really noticeable.

Thanks for the link. I have been looking for a great place to get bulbs. Looking at their site I see that their price is lower than other places I have looked.

my sony model kv32fs120 is binking 5 times! what should i do?

Never mind, i have a neighbour who fixes tvs for a living and he took a look at it and said the repair would cost about $300 and that's if he can even get the part. So I threw the tv in the garbage and went to PC Richard and luckily got a nice Sony 36inch for $400, on sale from $750. It's nice and thin and unlike the tv i threw away that was so heavy that it almost broke my hubby's back to just carry it out to the curb, this one weighs only 15 pounds.

I have a Sony KP-61HS30 projection television that's been having a problem. After watching television for a bit, the screen turns off automatically and has no picture but has sound. The indicator light is blinking 5 times. When the screen does work, the images jump up and down and twitch. We had a television repair guy come out and he said it was a problem in the circuit breaker/board, and would cost $500 to repair.

Any guidance would be appreciated. I don't want to buy a new tv yet, and am willing to make the repairs if I can be pointed to a repair manual and a site I can buy the appropriate part from. Would really appreciate your help.

A repair man said it was a circuit or breaker board and cost you 500.00 – I am sorry but that is not even close to what is going on! I am a Sony authorized tech here is what is happening. The 5 blink indicates a white balance error this is usually one of two things. Either the driver ic on one of the crt boards has failed or one of your crt’s (picture tube) are bad. If the driver was bad the error would be displayed all the time and the tv would not come on at all. The most common problem is a bad crt. The tech that came out probably was just a board swapper I know this type, it is the new generation of repair people that will only swap boards and do not attempt to repair them. In fact all new television manufacturers require that as the only repair method now. So the older techs who know the business are usually stuck at the shop or retired by now.
Sorry for the rant, but I have some bad news for you one of the the crts are bad and most likely not available any more. If you look closely at your picture when it comes on you will see that the tint of the picture is off, it is missing (or very weak) one of the colors red, green, or blue. That is the clue as to which tube is failing. Then just replacing one tube will throw the white balance off in the other direction because the other tubes I am sure are worn allot as well. The new tube will then throw the color off because it is too strong and it will also be hard to balance the older worn tubes. I have dealt with replacement before on a worn set and the outcome is never what you would want it to be.

zapdbf said: coperhagenjunkie: The three flashes is not a sos code, it is simply telling you it is striking the bulb, you don't get an sos code till the tv goes into shutdown. I know that this is confusing, but the red light will flash until the lamp strikes it just so happens it strikes every three blinks. You have a typical bad bulb, the lamp has to keep restriking. be careful if you don't change the bulb you will damage the ballast, the frequent restrikes will fatigue the ballast and cause it to fail early.

HELP!

So I installed a new bulb.  I can hear a click, fan comes on, goes off. It's about 2-3 seconds for all that to happen. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

After the fan kicks off what is the blink code? if it is three it is a cover error, there are two switches the bulb has to be inserted tight to make switch 1 close and the other is on the cover depending on the style it is either on the turn knob that locks the door or above the thumb screw on the other style. The bulb can be hard to seat properly and pulling it out and re seating it usually works. Our customers have this issue all the time try reseating the bulb.

Thank you for your reply.

Yes it is 3 blinks. I pulled the back cover off to verify the cover is contacting the switch, it is. I reinstalled the bulb cage several times. No luck.

That is what it is. I am not there to help sorry. but it is a bulb contacting the switch or the door not contacting it's switch. or the switches are broken. I had that only once. It has mostly been what i said. There is not much of a slop on the switches they are pretty precise if the bulb is off 1/8 th of an inch it will not close the switch.

OK, thank you.

9:05 pm Well I got it. You have to push pretty hard.

THANKS AGAIN!

Thanks for your response yesterday regarding the five blinking lights on my Sony projection tv and the repair technician coming by to give me an estimate. So it sounds like replacing one of the tubes may be a too involved repair, as it may throw off the picture. That makes sense. Final question though, so it looks like buying a new tv may be the answer, correct? I may just buy a cheaper used tv at this point since my wife and i are strapped for cash. Thanks for your help.

Hi I've a sony kdf-50e2010 when I turn it on it stays on for 3 mins then turns of the power light is green but when it turns of it blinks red twice then green, what is wrong with my tv and can u tell me how 2 fix it any1 thank u

amandap064 it is your bulb, this is a typical pre failure problem, the bulb needs to strike with high voltage to light, if the bulb goes out again the ballast will try to restrike the bulb. if it is successful no error will be generated but you will see the light flash as it is trying to restrike the bulb. Replace your bulb and it will be fine again.

replacing sony wega lamp kdf-e42a10. Okay...My picture has been looking like tobacco stains on screen, leaving a smear of normal color in the bottom screen. Went on for a while....One night while watching my Sepia tv, I heard a loud pop noise, the screen went black. I googled it and said it was the lamp. So after waiting 2 weeks, I ordered this lamp and installed it. Green for a hot second, then blinks red 3 times on standby. Still black screen! Please help?

3 blinks is a cover error, either the bulb is not seated in correctly or the cover over the lamp is not locked it, most of the time the customer has not pushed the bulb in all the way till it makes proper contact, try removing the bulb and re-inserting it. If you read further back you will find this same conversation with someone else and how they had to try several times to get it right.

Please help! sony wega kdf-e42a10 is what I have. Over the last year or two, the screen has slowly become all sepia in color, with a smear of purple/white light on screen. Two weeks ago my tv made a loud Pop! noise and the screen went black, sound off. Looking at the lamp, there is glass pebbles inside the light bulb area. I ordered a new one. Just replaced it and the screen looks the same. I can smell 'heat' the lamp is on, but am pretty sure there should have been a fan running? Not running. I pulled the plug on it. I am worried now! help please! thank you!

Blinks 4 times

Hi,

Hi,
My Sony TV DRC-MF 32" blinks a red light when I try to switch on.notice it is on sleep timer. Red light blinks 10 times sometimes the picture comes .Can u please tell me how to rectify this problem

Thanks
Priya

cgp: The problem with a 4 blink is that you could be dealing with a hand full of components that may be defective. vertical output and capacitor or two and a fusible resistor, fixing this problem takes a little more skill than just dropping in a few parts.

Priyap: That is a European model. Other than it blinks 10 times you are not explaining your problem clearly can you tell me what it is doing with more detail.

I have a Sony Projection TVModel No. KP-FX432M91.Made in Malaysia prod. of Sony corp.
My problem is that I fell asleep while watching Tv and didnt switch it off. So when i tried to switch on next day there was a red light blinking every 10 times .So I kep switchn on and off then the picture suddenly appears else it doesnt appear when I switch on. But tday the picture didnt come at all. Dont understand the codes. Can u help me get the picture Sometimes I can even hear without the picture.

Ok, mine seems ot be the switching regulator.

Cna someone help me to identify it? My tv is the ks-50r200a (rear projection)

It has this board...

Please help me to identify the switching regulator?

I have a sony bravia kdl-40s3000, 2006-2007 model. It doesn't turn on and standby light blinks 8 times. kindly help. thanks

Hi There,
I have a sony kvar34m36 crt tv i bought in 2003. just recently the color is not right, its either too blue or green. the standby light blinks 5 times and im not sure what that means. I still want to fix this if its not too expensive. Any ideas. thanks.

My power button no longer works. I have a nine blink then pause and then repeat. I could not repair myself is this worth having fixed?

my sony trinitron can no longer be turned on with the power button or via remote. There is a nine blink then a pause, and repeat. Is this worth trying to fix?

9 blink error is not too bad, if this is a flat panel or an ldc projection tv my comments will not fit, but if this is an old crt projection tv then they will fit, This is zero crossing error, for an experienced tv tech this is not a hard fix. if they have the parts they could fix it in the home. Might cost $100 -200 to fix.

have 2001 sony and in the chanels 2,4,7,9,12 the number three comes on up in right hand corner.picture goes out can still hear sound, then red light blinks.then pic comes back on and it does it again but in the higher channels it does not do this..could this be because of cable hook up

my tv won't turn on and continuously flashed a red light.

I have a Sony kp-57ws520 originally had a 9 blinking code fixed that now its a 5 red blinking code. Where. Do. I need to go now. Where. Is the c board?

Hey there, I have new flat screens but I love my Sony projection too except it's not working all the time.
Some times I will get lucky and the video will show whats on and I can watch it. Sometimes it comes on with a black screen and just the audio.
When it only gives me the black sreen with audio, it blinks11 times rapidly and then 6 times or 5 or 10 slowly and shuts off.

Model is : KP46-WT520
Manufactured in 2004

This just can't be the end of a great TV can it???

Please help me....
I just got full custody of my boys ages 9 and 15 on May 3rd, and I desperately want to put this in their "hang out room" so they can play games and watch tv

I have a Sony KV-32HS420. It started not always coming on and progressed until it never came on. The red standby light would originally repeatedly blink 6 times and later 7. I replaced IC6501 and IC8002. The TV worked for about four days and then when the power button was pushed the Tv would make some noises, the standby light would blink three times and the TV would die (no more light blinks). I read about a few other people this had happened to so I bought more new ICs and replaced IC6501 and IC8002 again but with the same results. Should I try something else or give up?

I have a KV-34XBR910 and recently it was making a pop noise when it was turned on. Now it still pops and does not turn on, I was getting on the display 4 flashes, then I tried to use another outlet and got 6 and 7 flashes... tonight I tried it and it turned on. How do I reset the settings? I tried the sequence of (display, channel, 5, volume plus, then power) but my remote does not have only a channel button, it is a plus or minus... Help!!
UPDATE... Sunday, May 22 at 10:45pm...I did not turn the tv off since this posting and its running fine. afraid to turn it off and it might not restart. I think I have had some powerserges here at this new apt... Has anyone tried to reset the tv by the sequence of (display, channel, 5, volume plus, then power) and did it work??

For me, this was an easy fix. I unplugged the TV, removed the covers, removed the lamp, retrieved my yard blower, and blew the dust like crazy out of the TV. Next I replaced the lamp, the covers, plugged the TV back in, and it came right back on. Maybe beginner's luck, but it worked like a charm. Good luck!!!

Hi, my beloved sony 50" rear projection tv (model KDF50E2010) switches on but without picture or audio. I have a green LED that blinks 14 times and then a red one blinks 3.....Is my Sony off to TV heaven or is there life in the old boy yet?
any info would be most appreciated.

I have a problem with display on my sony television KDL-32V4000.
The red standby light blinks 3 times first and then 4 times. It blinks 4 times thereafter.
How can i repair this?

I have a Bravia KDL52XBR9 that is just past warranty. Initially, it would work fine most of the time then suddenly shut off and blink 13 times - the service/training manual indicates a bad backlight or LCD screen. It got steadily worse until it would not turn on. I took it apart and checked all the CCFL backlights. When I put it back together it blinked 6 times instead of 13 - this means a backlight problem. Now, a month later, when I power it on it blinks 3 times - manual says this indicates a bad BU board.

Question is, is it possible the BU board was to blame all along? Should I replace the BU board or is that just a waste of money?

I have a sony model kp_57hw40 ! The tv turns on the screen licker and then it shut off. Before start flickering red ring would apparer on screen

I have a sony KDS50A3000 and when I turn it on the power light (green) blinks but no picture.?

Hello I have a sony lcd projection tv model number kdf-e60a20 2006 model it comes on for 30 sec to 1min then audio and picture goes out but not completely off as the green light is still on. However the green light never blinks at all in this process it remains on without any blinks. The picture returns in 30 sec to a min then repeats this cycle. Was told by repair guy it is mostlikely the bulb, I know you can't be 100% sure of the problem but what is ur opinion do you think I should start with the bulb 1st like the repair man suggested of do you have any other suggestions?

I have a Sony Trinitron Color TV - KV-27S40. There is no sound or picture but the Stand by/Timer light is flashing. I have turned off the TV/unplugged it/and checked the manual and pressed buttons on the TV. Can anyone help me?

My house had a lightning strike in the back yard. It traveled through the phone/internet line and through my ps3 then through the hdmi cable and fried my sony dlp 55" grand wega. I'm getting the 2 flashing red lights. I've taken it pretty much completely apart and can't find any signs of burns on the circuit cards or anything else. Anybody know what i can do?

I have a Sony KF-60WE610. It turns off and the indicator light blinks 8 times. Do you know what the cause is and if so how expensive is this to fix?

3 blinks is a cover error check the bulb seating and the door alignement. Very common after replacing a bulb.

Sony owner - how many flashes is there?

Frustrated52 you are not going to find burn marks generally, the damage is physically unseen. I have dealt with many lightning strikes and it can get to be expensive, the lightning will splatter through the television damaging more than one board. Rarely have i ever worked on a tv and had only one board damaged. Need a model number to decipher the 2 blink code.

The model number is kdf-55e2000. There is 2 flashes the light and everything will start up for a few seconds then everything will shut off and flash red twice. I really like the tv and don't want to have to go buy a new one. Thanks for any help!
