HDMI is a connection standard that is capable of supporting digital audio over the same wire (in certain versions), however it's not required nor supported by all devices.

If your laptop does not support the output of audio over HDMI, you'll need to use the stero hookup on your notebook for sound in conjunction with HDMI for video. To do this, you'll need a 1/8" to stereo RCA cable,or 1/8" to 1/8" stereo cable (depending on what the input is like on your TV).  Connect the 1/8" plug to the headphone output on your laptop and the other RCA stereo or 1/8" lead to the audio input where you've plugged in your HDMI cable. Adjust the volume settings on the laptop and TV as necessary to get decent sound.

would not you also need to

would not you also need to mke sure your TV was 720p, 1080i, and 1080p capable?

That's great news, and good advice for anyone else running into this problem. Sometimes it's easy for us geeks to jump over the "is the setting enabled" simple solutions. ;-)

Enjoy your digital sound!

Hi there, I'm in need of help

Hi there, I'm in need of help, I'm all out of options and I think I've tried everything.

I'm running my PC through my HD tv, I can get the video working fine, no problems at all, but no matter what I try I cannot get any audio.

I've tried running the audio lead through through the TV and even direct through the stereo speakers but still nothing, I've tried all the outputs at the back of the PC and still nothing. Even through the HDMI and no separate audio leads there is STILL no audio.

Can anyone shed some light on this as I cannot think of anything else i can try.

My TV is the Sony KDL 32W4000 and the PC is a Dell XPS 420. Not sure if that will make a difference.

I had the same problem and came to this board for help and found my own solution.

My set-up: ASUS lap top running Vista with HDMI cable connected to 26" Sony (KDL-26M400)

For some reason, probably my own doing, I lost the device configuration for "HDMI Output" that shows up in:
Control Panel - Hardware and Sound - Manage audio devices

How did I fix it?
plug and play baby. . . I unpluged the HDMI cable from the monitor and pluged it in hot. Vista recognized the new device and added the "missing" files.

Good Luck

ok i joined this forum to try

ok i joined this forum to try and give aid to this problem which i also had.
this method is for nvidia cards only. make sure you get the latest graphics drivers installed before you follow my instructions. u follow at your own risk, leasure, behavior etc.....
unless your HDTV has some option to select to ensure that external audio will be played through it, all you need to do is as is instructed.
p.s follow these instructions after you have freshly booted your computer up.
this method isn't for getting audio through a hdmi cable, you will need the 3.5 audio jack for your pc audio out and the eqivalent input tv jacks for this method to work
1. there should be a pc input along with an input for audio on the back of your tv. if there isn't on....well...you know...let me know and i will see if i can help with it....
2. connect the pc to the tv via the input for the pc on the tv (dvi/hdmi-hdmi).
3. when your pc is up simply go the NVIDIA control panel and under 'display' click on the 'change resolution' option.
4. on the right ensure there should be an option in option 2 under 'connector' where u should see hdmi- HDTV(audio disabled). if it isn't disable then set it to disable and hit apply at the bottom of the window.
5. connect your pc audio cable into the input on the TV.
ps my Samsung 46" uses hdmi 2 along with 2 rca inputs for pc audio so i use a 3.5 jack at one end of the cable to connect to the pc and the 2 rca jacks at the other end of the cable to the tv.
6. start playing a song in your media player and ensure that it's turn up fairly high for testing audio, keep the track on repeat to ensure there is always audio.
7. you should hear the pc audio but if not, don't worry, here's what to do. simply go back into the nvidia control panel as listed above and under the connector option where it should say 'hdmi-hdtv audio disable' click on it and choose the enable option and then hit apply. wait 20 seconds and now hit the same option again and choose disable and hit apply and that should fix the problem.
if you still don't hear anything simply restart the computer and follow the instructions again. if your tv requires you to change settings to allow audio from outside source then make sure to apply them to ensure proper functionality.

this fix the problem for me so i hope it fixes it for you.

Hi, it seems the majority

Hi, it seems the majority here have only audio issues. I have both (Audio and Video). I have a HDMI to RCA/VGA cable which I recently bought and I'm trying to connect my PC to my TV. When I connect them through RCA, I don't get any Audio or Video on TV and when I try TV's VGA (PC) connection, I don't see an external monitor option on my PC (Fn+F5). I have an Acer laptop running Win 7 and LG TV. Am I doing something wrong here? It looks like my PC doesn't detect the HDMI cable at all. I have successfully connected my PC to another TV that had a HDMI input using an HTMI cable.

Thanks in advance.

I'm running WIN7 on a dell

I'm running WIN7 on a dell laptop (inspiron 1525). Connected laptop to a Sony Bravia TV via HDMI...great video, no sound to tv...just the laptop speakers. So, I added a Y audio cord from the headset jack of the laptop, still no audio to the TV unless I unplug the HDMI connection (seems HDMI overrides the audio cable). In the sound device box, my laptop doesn't seem to recognize the HDMI connection and I'm sure all drivers are up to date. On the other hand I get both sound and video from tv when connected with VGA/audio cables. Very frustrating as I want the higher resolution for my photography work and photo/audio/essays. I'm stuck, and have tried many solutions.

I just got a LG LD450 and I'm trying to play movies using my Dell laptop. I got video with no problem but I can't get audio. I have a cable running from my headphone jack on my laptop to the headphone jack on my LG but it still isn't working.
Any thoughts?

I have a unique situation I

I have a unique situation I hope someone can help with. I'm hooking up a PC via HDMI to an NEC P461 LCD. The resolution is odd - cutting off apx 10 pixels all the way around so that the system tray is barely visible and the top of the recycle bin is cut off etc.. What I'm saying is that it's cut off all the way around - not just on the right and bottom like a normal resolution issue. Ok - just store that in the back of your head for now.

Next - there is no HDMI option on the PC for audio. However, audio does work fine over HDMI only. So, now I take this same PC and hook it to a Dell monitor - resolution is perfect, sound still works fine. Ok - store that in the back of your head for now.

Next - I take an identical PC (I mean identical) and start this whole process with the Dell monitor first. Video is good, but no sound. No matter what settings I change. So I take the PC, go hook it to the NEC display and back to the resolution issue I described above. But now sound works. Disconnect and move back over to the Dell monitor - resolution is perfect and sound works.

So my question is - Dell has caused us weird issues in the past, so I'm not surprised to have these - but what is it in the NEC that is triggering audio to work? And what is it triggering? Is this just completely hidden in something like DDC that I can't do anything about or is there a setting somewhere that I can get to?

I'm a digital signage re-seller and I'm sending these PCs out to a customer. I can get them all set up to work here before they go by hooking them to the NEC P461 display, but what happens when they mess up and I'm trying to fix them in the field? I can't tell my customer to unrack the PC, go find an NEC display somewhere and connect it to it and then take it back.

If anyone understands what I'm saying and can help, I sure would appreciate it!

Thank you,

lerski

I also am having problems

I also am having problems with a Samsung 42" Plasma TV (about 3 years old). Connecting a 6-month old HP laptop via HDMI to the TV's "side" HDMI jack (vs the ones in the back). Trying to stream Netflix movies. The video works great, but no audio through the TV - only through the laptop speakers. Tried looking at the TV and PC settings, and I don't see anything obvious to turn on the audio. Is it possible the cable is bad (it's brand-new), or is there something I need to switch on to get the audio to stream as well?
