gadgets maketing

I am a marketing communication specialist in a security and home automation company. We are about to launch a sophisticated web based platform which enables to view and control ones house in a very secure way. Preparing the launch plan i am occupied with the abstract side of gadgets. What makes one product a shiny toy we can not resist and another an overpriced commodity no one cares about. As early adopters you are the only ones with a qualified answer on this. Thanks

Simple. Functionality combined ease of use. Price is secondary.

I would say it really depends

I would say it really depends on who you're marketing it toward. Early gadget adopters are great targets since they are always up for trying something new, but it does need to provide ample value to their lives. Without knowing much more about the product, I can't vouch that additional security is at the top of an early gadget adopters list.

If you are marketing a product that already has established alternatives in the marketplace, your product will need to at least offer similar fuctionality, but I'd try to focus on more than just better security.

Given the nature of home security products, I'm not sure if even the early gadget adopter is your target. Sure, they are more than capable of installing this stuff themselves in most cases, but even the early adopter yeilds certain projects to professionals. I'd spend a little more time focusing on professional installers and salesmen that recommend, sell, and install these types of products in the consumers home. In my experience, it's the salesmen and installers that get these things into a consumers home... mass market and gadget adopters alike. Who do you think the gadget adopters get some of their product advice from?

Of course, it is the early gadget adopters that can drive sales, and tell friends about new and slick products. Perhaps you should think about advertising your product at TechLore, since this is where many of the early gadget adopters hang out.
