I believe it could be the memory cards are not fully seated.
Be sure the are firmly pushed down and no unusual lights inside are blinking.
I have done this before by accident I did not want to push too hard getting them in and all I had to do was pullout the cards and put them back properly.
Your second possibity is many machines require special memory depending on the manufacturer.
It can be they need also to be replaced in pairs.512 MB needs a pair of 256 MB

Finally "Plug and Play" means just that in Win XP and beyond.
If you install more memory (very cheap now)or add a new component outside through USB 2.0 it will set it's self up.
If it comes with a CD then use it.
It will go online to get any updates then so yo can't lose.
Just have a fast internet service provider like Cable.(ISP)
