Magnavox Projection TV problem...

I just was given a Magnovox Rear projection tv.   I put it in my daughter's room, and it looks crazy.  The focus is not right, and all the colors are not blending together at all.  Can someone help?  I read an article posted about changing the fluid.  Should I do that?

model-  fp5251g104

What you have is a

What you have is a convergence issue, and also Phillips tv's are notorious for fluid problems with primarily the blue tube and secondarily on the green tube. the red tube never seems to have a problem with fluid. If the blue or green colored picture (Since the convergence is off) is severely smeared hazy looking you need a fluid change, also i will look down into the tubes with the tv on to see if the fluid is clear, look in the red tube so you can what a good fluid looks like, then look down in to the green and blue tubes. At least you will have to replace the STk convergence ic's. If you have to change the fluid, this could be a huge repair with allot of expense, if you have a professional do it.

I read the instructions for

I read the instructions for one to do it themselves, if careful would someone like me with no to little knowledge about these tv's be successful?

zapdbf
The stk's are easier to

The stk's are easier to change than the fluid, i would attempt this first and verify that you need to change the fluid. if even one tiny drop of the fluid gets onto the boards it can cause the tv to severely malfunction and damage the boards. I have not read the instructions here on how to change the fluid, i am not sure where you read this from. I really don't know if you can do this repair, i will be honest it is one of the more involved repairs that can be done, usually requiring allot of adjustments after the repair is done. And you will be dealing with the crt's. they will possibly have 30,000 volts on them even with the set unplugged.

steve
well that sounds like fun :)

well that sounds like fun :)   Do you suggest that first then?  changing the crts?  is it cheap to get parts?  Thank you for all your help by the way :)

Check to make sure you need

Check to make sure you need to change the fluid, like i said above. The stk repair is a given, The cost of the stk's are not that bad although avoid the really cheap ones, because there are allot of poorly manufactured ic's out there. MCM electronics is one place you can go. there are other places Larry seems to have some good sources.

I have the directions to

I have the directions to change the fluid, and I have done this many many times. It goes like this:

Changing Projection TV Coolant

1. Tip the TV set so the expansion chambers are pointed up. The expansion chamber is a small white/clear plastic bulb-like thing that is attached to one side of each of the CRT's up near the top lens. In some TVs, the expansion chambers are already pointed up - In this case you don't have to tip the TV

2. Cover the circuit boards below the CRT's with several paper towels to prevent accidentally spilling any coolant onto the boards. The coolant is corrosive and will destroy the circuit boards. Don't skimp on the paper towels here - they are cheap!!!

3. Remove the four screws that hold on the focusing lens assembly and remove the focusing lens assembly.

4. Note the position of the expansion chamber then remove the expansion chamber. It will need to be reinstalled in basically the same position so remember the position or take a picture if you need to. There is a small o-ring on the neck of the expansion chamber where it threads onto the CRT housing - Don't loose it!

5. Use the baster and tube to suck the fluid out from the hole where the expansion chamber was removed. This hole is fairly small...maybe 5/16" or so.

6. Once most of the fluid is out, remove the four screws that hold on the lens cover plate.

7. Remove the lens cover plate, the lens & the large o-ring. (be gentle with the o-rings!!!)

8. Clean the CRT chamber & lens with denatured alcohol. Use 100% cotton balls so you don't scratch anything.

9. Clean the CRT chamber and lens with distilled water. Again, use 100% cotton balls so you don't scratch anything. This will rinse out the alcohol residue. You need to use distilled water for this so there is no mineral residue.

10. Gently clean the large o-ring with distilled water (don't use the alcohol because it might eat the o-ring) Dry off the o-ring and lightly coat it with 100% pure silicone (not siliconized acrylic caulking or acrylic latex caulking - ONLY USE 100% SILICONE).Use your fingers to rub a thin layer of silicone all over the surface of the o-ring. Then place the o-ring in the groove in the CRThousing.

11. Place the lens in its position on the o-ring.

12. Place the lens cover plate over the lens and install the four screws.

13. Clean your baster and tubing with denatured alcohol then rinse with distilled water.

14. Use the baster and tube to suck clean fluid from the bottle and install it into the CRT through the expansion chamber hole. Goreally slow when it is almost full to minimize overflow. Wipe up any overflow immediately. There will be a small air pocket inthe CRT when you are done - you will not be able to fill the chamber 100% - This is O.K. Just be sure to fill it as far as possible so the fluid is just up to the edge of the expansion chamber hole.

15. Install the expansion chamber. Be sure to install it in the same position as it was before you removed it. Also be sure that the small o-ring is on the neck of the chamber before you thread it on. The chamber is just plastic so don't over-tighten it or you might damage it. Screw it on as tight as you can go by hand and then give it about 1/8 of a turn with pliers. (you might have to use needle-nose pliers to get a good grip on it.)

16. Place the focusing lens assembly into position and install the four screws.

17. Turn on the TV and check for leaks over the next 20 minutes. Remember, you have not yet removed all the paper towels from inside the TV. Remove these once you know there are no leaks.

Other things that should be done after replacing the fluid include...

1. Clean the mirror

2. Clean the top lenses of the focusing assemblies

3. Focus the CRT's

4. Adjust the convergence

Here is a list of things you will need:

1. Turkey baster

2. Vinyl tube

3. Cooling Fluid

4. 100% cotton balls

5. Paper towels

6. Denatured alcohol

7. Distilled water

8. Pliers

9. Screw driver

Wow, that is not how we do it

Wow, that is not how we do it, although what you are suggesting will work fine.  We remove the crt assembly from the tv and then separate the crt from the lens assy.

Doing it that way , or the

Doing it that way , or the way you do it, I have found messes up the convergence. I have done this in the home a few times with no trouble at all.

zapdbf
The newer crt's will not have

The newer crt's will not have the white expansion chambers, they have changed this to be a rubber expansion located under a plastic dome integrated as part of the crt housing sitting on top you can see a black dome. on this type there is a black plug.

I have not had to do any

I have not had to do any fluid changes recently on Magnavox or Philips, as This was several years ago, when we were authorized. Thanks for the tip!

Yes, it does affect convergence, most of it can be adjusted out with the convergence rings, then with a touchup on the edges in the digital convergence.  but again it is just how you do it. What you are doing is fine. My fear has been getting a drop of fluid in the set causing me more trouble.

Larry Dillon
Thats why you cover the

Thats why you cover the boards. I generally go through a couple of rolls of paper towels, as you buy them bulk and they are cheaper. i have, in the past, did not use anything to cover the boards, and I have spilled fluid on the boards but did not damage it as I washed the board with the power wash in the spray can. Works great. Leaves no residue.

Hey I have done that to both

Hey I have done that to both my green and blue crts but now the convergence is off can you guys please help?!

There are two ways to work

There are two ways to work this, if you did not remove the crt's and are having convergence trouble, you may have bumped the rings on the crts, actually on Philips they are on the yokes, two ring tabs, try moving them to align them up. If this does not work completely, leave the rings in the best  convergence that they will go in, then do a factory convergence. To get into factory convergence mode is slightly different on different models. it always starts out with pressing the keys 062597 then either status, menu, or enter. it is different on each tv. And on some models it is 062596, then the other key options i have mentioned.

Hi everybody,

Hi everybody,

A quick question regarding changing the fluid (and any projection TV repair in general)..what dangers should  a novice be aware of when working on a project like this? I just bought a 50" Philips (50P8342) TV from a neighbor for $30 and it seems like the convergence ICs have failed, so I am going to try to replace them.

Thanks for all your help!

I have tried going into this menu and there are so many functions in there if I go to the 062596 how do I know when my adjustments have been set do i have to hit ok , I have really screwed up my magnavox..  I changed the coolant in all chambers, the set worked fine and I was just trying to get the blue fringe out of my picture.  Do you have any tips for getting my good picture back.  thanks in advance for any help you can give me..

try "7" as the last digit

try "7" as the last digit instedt of "6" this might bring up the convergence menu. Diffrent models use diffrent edning numbers for the convergence menu, the convergence is pritty stright forward and easy to figure out once you brougt it up, by hitting "6" as the last number you were probibly in the factory setup menu you saw things like akb and other such 3 letter minomic codes. If this is what you saw then you were not in the convervence mode. try the "7" as the last digit. THE CONVERGENCE MENU IS SIMPLE, THE TV SETUP MENU IS MORE COMPLEX, ALL MODELS ARE THIS WAY. TRY THE "STATUS" KEY OR THE "MENU" KEY, THIS WILL ALSO CHANGE ENDRY MODE

Thanks for your help, I did go into the 7 but didn't seem to be any help with all the different color issues I'm having, I am willing to try anything to fix this..could it possibly be the adjustments for the 3 colors in the back of the t.v. Do I need the manual for this t.v. to be able to go into the "6"?  thanks

I have a 8p6044 c101 that I

I have a 8p6044 c101 that I did a fluid change on. 062597 + Menu got me to the convergence menu. It was real easy to finish after that. Amazingly it worked on a sony universal remote I have. I wanted to thank you zapdbf for putting the codes out there. I had a hard time finding them and position rings will only get you so far.

I have a 60" model# 9p6040

I have a 60" model# 9p6040 the boards inside have like an in of dust on them can i use a compressor to clean these with out damage and my picture has a haze to it like cloudy can someone answer these ? ?

yes sir sounds like you have

yes sir sounds like you have contaminated cooling fluid inside the tubes, very common problem. you can go to tvrepairkits.com and order the fluid change kit for your model or chassis, not hard to do as it comes with easy to follow directions and everything needed for this repair.
Larry, if you had a 3-D looking picture in the past or now, you will need the convergence repair kit also.

I have the same reddish

I have the same reddish-orange picture on my Philips Magnavox 60". I bought a fluid kit, but was wondering why everyone says the red fluid doesn't need changed. Thanks for posting the instructions to help with the fluid change... I hope I can do it without any problems!

zapdbf
The problem is with bacteria

The problem is with bacteria growth in the fluid, the bacteria does not like the red light, i likes the blue tube the best so it will be the worst, green will need it sometimes, but it is a good idea to change both.

Typezer0
It is wise to change all

It is wise to change all three. If you're gonna change one or two, do all of them. Check my link above and one of my pics I show the fluids labeled by color. You'll notice even the red needed changing.

Changed fluid in my LP4620

Changed fluid in my LP4620 last week, spilled fluid on board soon as I started. Finished changing fluid in all three, now knowing what I do I would pull both circuit boards clear out of TV before I started. Cleaned board with contact cleaner and turned on, picture looked really good for about ten minutes, then 1500v capacitor smoked. Replaced capacitor, cleaned both boards with contact cleaner then compressed air, let dry for couple days then reinstalled. Watched three movies over 3 day period, TV looked really good, went to watch movie this morning and TV had audio but video was nothing but snow, or black and white fuzz. Its like I lost video input from dvd player. Normal on screen Magnovox menu works and I can read but its bouncing up and down. Audio and video work fine off my antenna thru coax, so I think I just lost my video input. Tried another DVD player and it done same thing have audio left and right but no video, any ideas on whats wrong or how I can test video input. This is on a Magnavox 46
