My RCA RT2500 has done the very same thing. Has anyone found a solution to the problem?

Thanks, Dun

Seems this is a common

Seems this is a common problem.

My RCA 2500 receiver seems to have done this after a flickering power outage. I guess it went out only for a second, then back on, then back, off, and again back on. Ever since, the receiver has no response to either the power button nor the remote. I can't imagine that it was a power surge because I have the receiver hooked up to a pretty hefty surge protector(can't have my precious computer dying now can I).

Well, I opened up the receiver, none of the fuses seem to be blown, I'll actually test them later. Nothing seems out of the ordinary inside so I'm kinda stuck.

If I find out anything I'll be sure to post and if someone else finds out something, please do post so the rest of us can fix the problem.

Well, I may have some good

Well, I may have some good news.

I checked on the fuses, and everything came out as okay. So, completely frustrated, I went with a method my father taught me, beat up on it if it doesn't work.(His solution applied to just about any electroic or mechanical device). I happend to have a standard computer PSU cord sitting next to me. I moderately hit the large brick(transformer), component with a 6 fin heatsink, and component in between heatsink and where the power hooks into the mainboard(which I think is the relay that clicks when you turn on te receiver). So I think it's this last component that was the problem, but who knows. I guess you can try to do this yourselves as well if you still have the receiver. If you do, let us know if it worked or didn'twork for you. Also, don't electrocute yourselves. Enjoy.

Authorized repair facility

Authorized repair facility checked mine out. Same problem with power bump and then nothing but standby light. Apparently a couple of caps got fried inside. still don't know how as I also have the High end surge suppressor installed as I don't want my entertainment system down for the count. I'll post more when I find out which caps for sure.

Glad to see I'm not alone.

Glad to see I'm not alone. The only way I've found to fix this (without paying a repair shop) is to turn off power strip and back on again. Happens when there is a power outage. Royal Pain.

I actually received an email from Thomson support asking me to call between 8 and 5 EST. I'll post whatever they tell me as soon as I can get through.

Got my RT2500 back from the shop no charge. My guy at the repair shop said all he did was pull the fuses and it was fine.Spent three days and who knows how much on long distance charges until I finally got through to Thomson tech support only to be told that they have no record of problems or recalls on the RT2500. I was told that they could refer me to a service center which I have already been through. My friend who is a RCA Authorized service center suggested getting a UPS and that way when I get the intermittent power outages The unit will not lose power. BTW another outage last night so I'm back where I started with the unit. Thinking about pulling all of my RCA equipment out of the house and putting it on the curb labeled as garbage or Really Crappy Appliances. Anyone interested in a class action suit against RCA?

Here it is folks. After screwing around with fuses and such I tried holding the power/standby button in while I unplugged the unit. To my surprise the unit powered back up. In the meantime I bought a UPS so that I don't have to go through this again. I think the above solution only works if you still have the standby light on. Hope this helps someone.

My RT2500 receiver is not

My RT2500 receiver is not working either and has the exact same problem, I tried a couple of the ideas and they did not work, hoping someone had any other ideas.

I know it sounds crazy, but

I know it sounds crazy, but this works for me everytime..Unplug receiver, flip receiver upside down and plug back in.  Mine comes back on everytime.  Weird, huh?  Whatever works, right?

Thanks Hawkeye, you just

Thanks Hawkeye, you just saved me $500 on a new unit! Lost power last night and had the no power up but the red light lit. I had my wife hold in the power button in while I wiggled my way to the power plug and unplugged it. She let go and I plugged it back in and it came up and worked! Go figure.

Thanks again Pal!

I just love forums.  I can double confirm that holding the power button and removing the plug works like a charm.  Thanks everyone, I think we got this one licked.

Same problem with my RCA

Same problem with my RCA RT2500 at the cottage and the fix mentioned above also worked for me, first time.

Once turned "on" using hold red glowing standby button and pull/insert plug method, everything great for the full weekend.

Interesting that I can not duplicate the condition (red standby light only, won't power up) regardless of number of times I try to simulate a 120 V power flash (pulling plug from wall and pluging back in quickly). It just keeps working properly and takes all the abuse.

Problem seems to come when I leave receiver for a week, unused and plugged into the wall outlet. Well least now I know how to wake up my RT2500 for weekend use.

Thanks Hawkeye - you saved me over $2,500 dollars. Wife was planning to use the shopping for a replacement amplifier to also buy a 42" LCD TV.

Had same problem with my RCA RT2500, after ugly power outage (power came on and off a couple of times and some lights in my house stayed on but where dim) ... when power was back the reciver would not come on. I followed what others had done.... power/standby light was on . held button , unplugged cord, let go of button , plugged unit back in . power/standby light now off , pushed power button and it now works!!!!!!!

thanks all

Tom

Have a problem with the RCA rt2500 reciever with the digital part of the reciever. Ok the problem is when I turn the reciever on and have a dvd in my dvd player the digital acts as if there is no sound then it starts coming in snaping and poping. Then it slowly sthe sound comes in and after this the sound is perfect and stays in when I play other dvd's.But when I turn it off and use it later again does the same thing all over again can you help me with my problem. steveboy

Mine does the same thing on

Mine does the same thing on power blips. The best way to reset the receiver is to unplug for 30 seconds and turn back on using not the power button, but one of the mode buttons such the Sat or DVD button. Hit the mode button immediately after plugging in power.

OK Guys, after 10 years, it is time to give it up! Between this power reset issue and the DTS bug where the subwoofer NEVER worked in this unit (a manufacturing error in the PAL code), throw it away and buy a new one!!! You will be amazed what DTS sounds like with a unit where the subwoofker works. I should have done this years ago. Butch

As the discoverer of the fix

As the discoverer of the fix and subsequent post I have to admit that I have gone over to the darkside and bought a Sony system to go with my Bravia TV, That being said I hope everyone who has used this fix and wants to keep using their RCA system enjoys said system. Something to be said for the old stuff.

I just wanted to thank the person who figured this out. After about an hour of searching the RCA site for information, I finally just typed my problem into google and this came up. Needless to say, holding the power button worked like a charm.

i just spent the 5 minutes it

i just spent the 5 minutes it takes to register to reply to this thread. i've had my RCA receiver for about 6 years now. its worked great. but today my wife unplugged the power cord and when she plugged it back in the receiver would not turn on. like everyone else said the red standby light would turn on when i plugged it in but hitting the button did nothing.

i tried the "hold on button in while unplugging" but the trick did not work. the one that worked for me was turning it upside down. which is always a pain due to the fact that i have about 5 components plugged into it and sitting on top of it. so i moved all the speaker wires and component ins and outs. turned the receiver over and let it down from about 1 or 2 inches to give it a good bang. who cares if it broke, it didn't work anyway right? i couldn't believe it that when i hit the power button it turned on. i didn't even unplug it through the process.

thanks everyone who posted this and got the keywords right so i could find it in google.

The fix that keeps on going!

The fix that keeps on going! A townhouse-neighbor moved in and had the red-standby-light-of-death issue, and decided to throw out her RT2500. After finding it blocking the lid of the dumpster when taking out our trash, I thought that anything this heavy deserves a second chance. Googled the model number and got here straightaway.

Sure enough, hold, pull, reconnect did it again! Now I've got to make the choice of whether to enjoy "our" new receiver, or earn points by giving her back her "repaired" unit.

Continued thanks to Hawkeye FTW!

lol enjoy it if she threw it

the "hold power button,

the "hold power button, unplug, let go button and plug back" in trick still works.

Holy Necro thread batman! I

Holy Necro thread batman! I know right? Anyway, want to still confirm that the above mentioned method is still working on my receiver. I can't believe the torment this old things will go through and still works great. I only use it on my gaming machine, but doubt I will replace it until it completely bites the bullet.
