Larry,

Larry,

I have the Sony KP-46WT500 and like everyone else's TV here, it has the convergence "bug", I replaced the STK ICs, however nothing has changed. Based on your responses I should be looking at the pico fuses, I found and checked the 6 on the "D" board and all seeems well. I know I should be looking at those on the "G" board as well, thing is, I can't seem to indentify the "G" board......so if you don't mind, please send me the service manual  (mark at s dash force dot com)  or point me in the right direction.

Thanks much, you're saving us poor folks quite a bit of bucks....I truly appreciate the help.

MY TV WORKS!

Larry, thanks for the manual and thanks to both of you for your contributions to this forum.  My advice to the rookie attempting this, is to get the desoldering iron with bulb attached from radio shack for the removal of the burnt ICs.  As a rookie myself, I found that the desoldering iron made the removal job a pain free one with a bonus at the end.  The bonus being that this tool did such a good job for me that all I had left on the board was an outline of the old solder, which I then use as my guide for soldering the new IC, making sure to stay within the outline. And as these guys mentioned 100 times already...CHECK YOUR PICO FUSES Smile. Good luck!

Just so you all know, this repair manual doesnt go into detail on how to do the repair or troubleshoot problems. It basically just shows the schematics of your circuit boards and the insides of your set. If you dont know what to look for then these manuals really arnt going to be a huge amount of help.

Wasantha,  if you could give more details about what the "problems" with your green tube are, Im sure someone here would be able to help you troubleshoot your problem and advise you on the best way to fix it!

Best of luck,

Dan

Hi Dan, Thanks for your reply

Hi Dan, Thanks for your reply, I wanted to see the schematics so I could see how things are connected, Basically the problem I'm having I have narrowed it down to the video signal flow to the green tube, The tube itelf is Ok, I have swapped G/R tubes to verify this, basically in a nutshell my problem is that green tube projection on the edges has a curve to it, I can get the center of the screen to converge but since the green projection images are disorted around the edges about 1/4 of the screen I see double image, RED and Blue are fine as they overlap correctly, Any quick fixes would be appriciated,

 Thanks,

Larry Dillon
Replace the convergence IC's

Replace the convergence IC's first. Then go from there.

Hello Everyone,

Hello Everyone,

I just started to see this happen to my Sony KP-46WT500 Circa Jan. 2003 (manufacture date).

My kids noticed the problem first after they knocked over their Nintendo Wii. It was after this episode that the convergence problem occured. I was just wondering if this caused it. I also discovered that my Paradigm floor standing speakers are not shielded, so I am also wondering if these two issues magnetized the set and caused the convergence problem. I have since removed the speakers from next to the set. Since I am only handy with a hammer and nails and not a soldering irom, I am taking some advice from this blog and I have called a local Sony approved repair tech company. They charge $85 just to show up and look at it! I( don't have a vehicle to tranport it and don't want to risk breaking the mirrors anyway.) But, can a projection screen tv be de-magnetized?

Larry Dillon
The set is not magnetized.

The set is not magnetized. There are two convergence IC's that need to be replaced. If they were Sony approved, they would have repaired this in the house.

 Thanks,

 Thanks,

I appreciate the info. If I get the run-around tomorrow, I will show them this site!

Larry,

Larry,

Just so everyone here who has talcked this problem themselves and knows how to do these things, here is some infor on how much you all saved.

Tech showed up this morning. cost me $85 as I mentioned before, just to lok at it.

Sure enough, convergence problem.

Anyone want to guess at his estimate to fix? $500.00!. And it would take 4 to 5 days.

I could go to Walmart and buy a new 37" Vizio for about $600.00.

Just not worth it. Makes me want to learn how to do this myself.

Not worth it. Anybody on this post live in CT?

Larry,

Larry,

I have a Sony Kp-46WT500 TV. I have been keeping up with this thread since I was having a problem with the convergence. The red was not aligned with the other colors. With the help of this thread I did replace the IC's and the TV is fixed. Thank you.

The only thing is that it seems that the TV isn't as clear as it was before. I was thinking maybe some of the settings in the service menu were off. Can you please send me the service manual for this TV. My  e-mail address is [email protected] . Do you have any other ideas as to why the TV isn't as clear.

Thank you.

It seems I have misplaced

It seems I have misplaced this model number manual. If I find it I will send it to you. Good Luck

I'm also having convergence problems with our Sony kp46wt500. this seems to be the problem of all problems with this unit. Color out of wack ect. I won't bore you with all the details as you have heard them many time over. I am an electronic guy and enjoy fixing things, but I do need a shematic if you have one. Appreciate any help you can give. Email TSEDMOND2cox.net. I will go off of the other post as for the location of the stk Ic's and pico fuses. You probably saved another sony from going to its grave prematurely.

Thanks again

Hello I have a Sony KP46WT500

Hello I have a Sony KP46WT500

Tv was working fine until today when I turned it on the screen turned completely blue then tv shut off.

Does anyone know what this problem may be and how do I fix it?

Larry Dillon
Without checking out the TV

Without checking out the TV set fully, of course this is only a good guess. These sets are very common for the picture tubes to cause your symtom. If you can get the tube, you should replace all three tubes at once. This will or should run you about 800 to 1000 bucks. Good Luck

SupaBlack
Okay thanx

Okay thanx

Is there a repair manual to show you how to change them out? Also say I change the tubes and that doesnt work are there any other malfunctions that can cause this problem?

Like I said the tv comes on then fades to a bright blue the shuts itself off & then I get 8blinks under the power button on the front of the tv.

Where are the numbers usually located on the tubes?

Thanx so much for your help

Need some help, Larry.

Need some help, Larry.

I changed the convergence IC's on my Sony KP-46WT500, checked the picofuses, and connections.

When I powered it back up, I had warpage/bowing from the top and bottom, both toward the center.  When I got into the manual convergence procedure, I can adjust the green and blue from left-to-right, but not the red.  I would have hoped I could have adjusted from top to bottom to address the warpage, but even though the number on the right changes when I move the up-and-down arrows, nothing is moving on the screen, for any of the colors.

When I was replacing the convergence IC's (which, by the way, were from a reliable source [I think] -Pacific Semiconductor in Canada), I had a lifted pad on the third pin on the end on one of the IC's, which I believe I repaired OK.

Should I have been able to adjust up and down on the grid, and do you have any idea which particular IC may still be questionable?  Or any other ideas?

Please help!  I'm trying to look like a tech hero by my family!!

Thanks,

Larry Dillon
You still have a bad Pico

You still have a bad Pico fuse by one of the IC's or on the G board.

Go inside and place something (ie: piece of cardboard) over two of the lenses leaving one showing at a time. check to see if blue and green are still bowed or if its just red. This will help determine which IC is either bad or is soldered imporperly.  I had a similar problem when i had done this.  I found that it was only my red that was bowed and that i couldnt adjust horizontal but could adjust vertical.  So unsoldered and re-soldered the IC that controls the red and got it working from there.

 Best of luck!

Double check all of the Pico

Double check all of the Pico fuses in the power supply as well as a couple of them right around the convergence IC's. They look like resistors, not fuse but are marked on the board starting with F

Larry / Mert1177:

Larry / Mert1177:

Thanks for you comments.

I covered up the lenses individually, and found that the red and green are bowed, but the blue is not (that's a good optical illusion!)

I also re-checked all the picofuses, which were OK, on both boards 7 fuses on one, and 2 on another.

I think part of my problem is the lifted pad I repaired.  It's pin 3 of the IC8001, and I soldered it to a neighboring trace that I thought was the right one, which is connected to the - side of C8025.  I saw the schematic shown on the 8/23/07 posting, but can't make out where pin 3 goes.

Any thoughts on which IC may still be problematic (since Blue is OK), where the pin 3 should go, or perhaps a schematic?  I suppose I could order an additional IC in the thought that I shorted IC8001 again.

Thanks in advance.  You guys are great!

Larry Dillon
Pin three of that IC is not

Pin three of that IC is not used so disconnect it from any connection, That could be your problem. Is that the RA-6 chassis?

pcutler
Larry,

Larry,

I believe it's an RA-6, as that is the prefix on a label on the D-board.  I just discovered your download section, and saw a full schematic for the RA-1 chassis, but not the RA-6.  Any further thoughts before I continue?  Since the Red and Green output connectors are near the IC801, that seems to be the one in question.

 Thanks,
