Just to reiterate.

Just to reiterate.

As an easy fix, since I can't solder, can I just replace the G and D boards?  I think I mistakinly said B board last time.

It's been almost 4 weeks and my wife is getting impatient with my lack of action on either repairing the TV myself, calling a technician, or buying a new one.  I would appreciate any assistance.

Thanks, Rob

If the boards are available,

If the boards are available, that will cost you a lot of cash. You can go to ptscorp.com get their telephone number and call them to see what they will charge you to rebuild the boards for you. Good Luck

Dear Larry.

Thanks so much. I have great reputation here. I have some detail questions to ask.

My TV model: SONY KP-51WS510

A couple of days ago, convergence  went bad. From the pictures, all colors are not aligned correctly. The pictures are distored. I tried flush focus but not work. All three plus signs during flush focus in 3 colors do not go to the same places. Do you know do I need to replace all 2 IC chips and possible some fuses too?

Thanks so much in advance.

John

I know this is a long thread,

I know this is a long thread, but it will anwser all your questions.  Do what I do and go through it backwards.  You'll find a lot of do's and don'ts.  One of the big don'ts is that now that you have the manual and access to the service menu, DO NOT TRY TO ADJUST IT before you replace the IC's.

And you always replace both IC's.  Order your IC's, watch the "How To" solder video a few pages back.  Put them in, and then worry about your fuses, or read back in this thread for the proper readings on the different fuses.  I've done 3 now and the new IC's always fixed the problem.

Good Luck

Thanks so much for your quick response. Do I need to take out D-board in order to install new IC's chip or can I unscrew them off and put the new one in? I saw the prices are over the place from all kinds of vendors.

Can anyone use this web site to fix the Sony TV whether successfully or not to post where and what prices do you puchase all IC-chips? Good or bad experience so that everyone here will not waste the money to purchase the BAD chip even at higher prices? Statistical results make economic sense?  Maybe you post a request to this thread to ask for IC-chip purchase experience and results so that everyone can benefits from that? Good idea?

 Thanks a lot.

mdonnelly said: I got tired of waiting for my mail-order STK392-560 chips to arrive, so I found a service center in the city that had them for $35/each.  I put them in yesterday, with a good coating of heat-sink compound.  With the chips screwed down to the heat sinks, the pins stuck out from the board at just the right height to solder, so that made it easy.  All the connectors went back in easily.  Sony did a good thing by adding color to the red and blue plugs, to match the labels on the sockets.  I had digital photos of the board before disassembly, but I didn't need to refer back to them. I turned the set on, and it was perfect.  No further adjustments necessary.  I'd like to thank Larry Dillon and techlore.com for being here and providing me with all the info I needed to fix the set myself.  I'm sure that I saved $400 over what a tech would have charged.  And, I had some fun getting into the job. :)

Hi, Mdonnelly,

Where did you puchase STK392-560? How much it cost for each of them? Also where did you get heat sink compund? I have the same problem and I need to pick up 2 STK392-560 IC's to fix my sony. Thanks in advance.

I ordered the chips from electronic-repair-kits.com for $15/each plus $5 shipping, but after three weeks I got tired of waiting for them to arrive from Canada.  I called around TV service numbers from the phone book until I found someone with the chips in stock.  Locally, they were $35/each, plus tax.  Sure enough, I fixed the set on Saturday, and the chips came in the mail on Monday. Embarassed

I bought the heat-sink compound and desoldering braid from Radio Shack.  I bought two 5A picofuses from a local electronics supply store.

Larry,

Larry,

As you seem to be the "Yoda" of the this forum, I thought you may be able to help.

I purchased a used KP61HS10 a few weeks ago, only to find out that the picture was horrid. After much research I am pretty sure it is the IC's ( picture blurred, thin horizontal lines through picture and colors not alinging)

randomly one day it worked for a few hours until we shut it off, this makes me wonder if the IC's are good but the connection is bad.

Do you happen to have any ideas , Also any manuals/schematics would be much appriciated.

Best regards

-A

Thanks, but I am not sure which one to use for the KP61HS10? also the TV looked great again then crapped out this morning. Any ideas? should I check the connections and possibly resolder them?

Larry Dillon
Yes for sure man. Resolder

Yes for sure man. Resolder the convergence IC connections before the iC's crap out all together.

Which service manual would be

Which service manual would be the right one?

Thanks a bunch for your help.

All the manuals for Sony are
All the manuals for Sony are fairly similar, so just look in your TV and see which on is closest.  All the IC's with their big heat sinks look the same.  And there's no way I would go to all that trouble and not change the IC's.  Because even if I won the lottery and your "resoldering" the IC's fixed the problem,  they have a limited life span and will have to be changed at some point.

Good Luck
and do yourself a big favor and skim through this thread, there's a lot of good info on do's and DON'TS...

Thanks for the super quick reply, Thinking power quality might be the problem here...Is that an acceptable thought? maybe or no...Saw that sony might be specing a different fuse for my used  KP-51ws510 ? Ordered from partsores already so guess I will have to wait and see if it holds.  Picked the set up for $100 and cant really find that many forums with too many troubles so I am pretty exited! Ideally I want a samsung dlp but $$$$ I know this sony's got some good years left in her it was made in 2002... hopefully in 2012 I can pickup a samsung :)

i wish you luck also but not

i wish you luck also but not to burst your bubble, the picture tubes are known to go bad all the time in these TV sets. What is the number of the fuse that is blown? It should be marked on the printed circuit board right beside fuse.

fuse test ok...must be a problem on power board, I noticed black dots on capacitors and such. Might have had a previous problem... any suggestions on what it could be?

Larry Dillon
After looking at your threads

After looking at your threads, I realized, this set DOES not have a light bulb. It uses three picture tubes, therefore, it does not use a thermal fuse. I would have to say, first measure the standby voltages in the power supply, then try the switched voltages.
