Hey, where ya been?

Flew into West Palm Beach, stayed with relatives in Boynton Beach. Hurricanes aren't a lot of fun in Florida: power is down and sewer pump stations are failing all the time. Got milk? You're a rarity. Publix can't keep enough milk stocked and I wonder if people are drinking it or hoarding it.

The local newspapers cover the situation much better than national media. I suppose the obligatory tech entry here is: use Google's News feature to find out about a subject. It scans local papers and offers more coverage than CNN or FoxNews or BBC News will ever bring to you (eletronically). After reading a few days of the local rags, I've concluded that I will never live in Florida; NYC Metro has far superior drivers but meaner temperments; rich people suck everywhere you go.

First point: Florida gets hurricanes, flooding, power outages, and the season goes from June to November. Screw that. Even a bad winter in Paterson can only last from December to March. Our August blackout last year lasted less than 12 hours. PSE&G might not be your favorite utility (it's mine), but they try to keep you connected and perform better disaster recovery than FPL. FPL has more practice at it and light at major intersections are still manned by tired, overworked troopers.

Second point: I'm mean, but I know how to drive fair. Floridians drive... badly. Mostly too slow and in any lane they happen to find, much like Puerto Rico driving (correlation? I dunno).

Third point: FEMA is giving out ice and water and other supplies for free at some shelter areas. People are rolling up in Lexus SUVs to get freebies. People without cars, without roofs, without homes have to wait in line with wealthy retards lacking the shame chromosome. My response would be firm and swift: pull them out of the line, and have them hand over the keys and title of their SUV to one of the homeless people.

Been thinking a lot about a diesel generator lately...
