Brian S If you have sound, I doubt if the tuner is bad.  It could be the rF out modulator on the DVR.  Try using one of the video outputs from the DVR to one of the viseo inputs to the TV set.  Also to check the TV set, try hooking up another set at that point where the Sony TV is from the coax output of the DVR to to coax input to another tV set.  Good Luck and please let us know how you made out.

Lynda C,  Your TV set may

Lynda C,  Your TV set may have a bad blue tube.  It could also be a blue drive problem.  To test this, your going to need a CRT tester/rejuvinator, to see if you have a short in the blue tube.  If not then you will need to troubleshoot the Blue CRT driver board on the blue tube.  It could be a simple cold solder connection, or a component on this board or with the RGB drives from the YC/video jungle IC.  Lynda, Im sorry to say, this set has no really quick fix.  This set has no user replaceable parts inside of it.  There is alot of really high voltage on this part of the set as well as on most of this chassis .  If you know how to read a schematic, and solder and also own a multimeter maybe you can find the problem.  if you say no to one of these, please play it safe and call in a pro to assist you with this repair.  Lynda, Good Luck and please let us all know how you made out and if you had the set fixed or you did it yourselfs.

Larry,

Larry,

It looks like you're right.  There was something wrong with the DVR.  I rebooted it and things are back to normal.  I will keep my eye on it.

Thanks again!

Good Brian, I was going to

Good Brian, I was going to suggest the resetting once you found out the DVR was the problem. Good Luck.

My 3 years old Sony KP

My 3 years old Sony KP-46WT500 rear projection has a problem this morning. The picture is distorted in concave shape (sort of like pinclusion shape). Haven't have time to play with the convergence setting. Need to go to work. But from my reading and research this looks to be a problem with the convergence ICs. Can someone tell me where to locate these ICs inside the TV. What else could be wrong and need to be checked? Could it be the same as ZIA's STK392-560 and same location?

Thanks

Zia
Dear Alboline,

Dear Alboline,

Congratulations that your tv starts work fine but would you please tell me the name and number of parts which you have replaced? Today is a new post by "free1965tv" stating the same problem. This confirms that this model of tvs by Sony have manufacturing problem. Nobody joined me to take up the matter with Sony to get a form of relief. I alone tried my best to convince Sony exchanging a number of emails but they are not ready to take up the matter with their higher authorities.

Free1965, you could have bad

Free1965, you could have bad convergence IC's along with other parts that go bad together sometimes.  It would be the convergence power supply feeds that open up msometimes when the ICs go bad.  These STK ICs are large stand-up rectangle shaped.  They are black and mounted on a large metal heat sink.  They start with STK ###-###  The lettering is white  Let us know if you need more help.  Good Luck

Just placed an order for two

Just placed an order for two STK392-560. I will start with that. Looks like the same IC for many Sony models.

Yes please keep us informed.

Yes please keep us informed.  hopfully you wont run into any other problems with the set.

zia i replaced the stk392-560

zia i replaced the stk392-560 chips. i have also been yelling at sony, i copied and emailed them threads from this forum and a couple others. i sent them the listing from electronics online that states the stk series of ics are common failure parts in most projection tvs.sonys rep denies any knowlage of the problem! i talked with 4 sony service center techs. they all said that this problem has been an ongoing issue.

i think that the problem you are haveing is related to solder joints on the new chips, there are glued on flatpack resistors that are part of rc delay circuits on the bottom of the d board, these resistors were connected to the pins of the amps via conductive paint. if you soldered the new chips in the paint is gone. especialy if you desoldered the old chips. i removed the heat sinks cut the old chips out heated and removed the pins one at a time drilled through the pin holes with a jewelers drill ,installed the new amps and heat sinks, applied just enough heat to the pins to melt low melt solder. tested the connections with a meter to the flatpacks. as i said before i have high res pictures of the solder joints showing whats hooked to who.

Dear Albonline,

Dear Albonline,

Sorry for late attending you, I was busy somewhere else. I will be obliged if you please email me ([email protected]), high res pictures showing resistors connected to pins via conductive paint. Also please let me know the name and number of parts, you have replaced on Sony D board.

So what parts were replaced? I just received my ICs today. Will try to work on it this weekend if possible. Very disappointed with Sony. Will let you know if the ICs are the culprit or not.

Have you all who are having convergence problems , made sure the + and the - B+ supplys are good yet?

Larry. How to check that??

To Answer Free1965tv's

To Answer Free1965tv's question.......For Sony TV(Model KP-57WS510) ICs STK 392 & 560(two convergence IC's) being replaced By Mike TV tech from Atlantic TV repair srvs......Some how on first time attempt something did not go right and he (mike) has to order same parts second time and thereafter everything seems to working just fine!

free1965tv, this is where you

free1965tv, this is where you will need a schematic to look for the B+ and B- points in the circuit.  As I always advise, If you do not know how to read a schematic, please consult a pro to assist you in the repairs.

Hello, I am trying to fix a Sony kp51ws510 projection t.v I am not really an expert on fixing Sony's (MY speciallity is Mit's) T> V> was working fine and just went off on it's own now when you turn on you get an error code of 8 flashes, what does this mean?  Can someone help me to diagnose, do not have the repair manual for this t.v stork in front, if anyone can help me with this problem it would be greatly appreciated! thanks Doug 66 (by the way this t.v. is only 2 or 3 years old!! Thanks!

Hello, is it true that all

Hello, is it true that all Sony big screen projection t.v. anywhere from 1 to 9 years old need a flyback transformer? Thanks doug 66

Eight blinks - Problem with

Eight blinks - Problem with the audio (AUDIO), unit goes to standby and blinks the self-diagnosis code. Check IC406 audio amp, PS401, and 402.  You should check this out http://www.techlore.com/article/15444/Sony-TV-Blinking-Codes--amp--What-It-Means-When-the-Standby-Timer-Light-Flashes/  No every sony TV does not need a flyback transformer, but almost every sony as well as most rear tube type projections sets will need the convergence IC's replaced sooner or later.  Good Luck, and please let us know how you make out with this repair.

Hello

Hello

I have a convergence problem with a Sony kp-53xbr35.  Knocked out my power supply as well.  Sent power supply board and convergence board to PTS Electronics to be rebuilt.  Got them back and installed boards and tv powered up but convergence is off.  PTS says that convergence board needs to be manually adjusted that there is no service mode and can't be adjusted digitally through the remote.  Question...Do you have any insight where I can get the service code for this model?  The remote control model is ( RM-Y114A).  I am in denial that there is no service mode for this model.  Most Sony's from that era service code is "display", "5",  "channel +", "power" all pressed within 5 seconds and you're in.  Doesn't work for the xbr35.  I would hate to start to adjust convergence pots manually without some kind of procedure.    Any insight would be helpful.

To do it manually....do I need some kind of monoscope image?  The cross hairs aren't enough to do the whole screen.

After I remove the 3 screws

After I remove the 3 screws that hold the chassis assembly. Do I need to disconnect all the wire connectors so I can pull out the chassis assembly?

healy 55, no service mode Im

healy 55, no service mode Im afraid on this set.  You really should get a service manual, and do the procedture by the letter of the manual.  You can download one at this site. http://www.servicemanuals.net/results.aspx?type=SM&brand=0&model=KP53XBR35  Good Luck, and let us know the progress on this repair.

Can I use the thermal

Can I use the thermal compound for PC?? It is labeled Ultra High Density Polysynthetic Silver Thermal Compound. I heard some compound has silver/zinc content that can cause a short circuit?? This is for replacing the convergence ICs.

Larry Dillon
Use the compound for IC's my

Use the compound for IC's my freind, as long as its for thermal conductivity.  I mean its not rocket science bud. LOL

Thanks for the link.

Thanks for the link.  Downloaded service manual.  Also bought a DVD with 24 different video pattern generator stills so I can actually see my corrections/adjustments better.   This model does have a service mode but it is extremely limited.  For convergence adjustments I now can turn off the CRTs individually by the remote in service mode.  Which I need to do to correctly adjust the convergence.  You have to press power and press this tiny hidden button in the back of the set at the same time to enter service mode.   Waiting on the DVD to start with the green first.   Will keep you posted on my progress.

Oh yea now I remember that

Oh yea now I remember that little button, Wow been awhile since I seen that one. i just cover each lens with a piece of cardboard I made with an elastic band on it.

Hi Larry

Hi Larry

So I replaced both convergence ICs and the problem remains. Any suggestion what is next?? The picture is curved at the top and bottom. All 3 colors are out of focus.

Thanks

Double check the + and _ b+

Double check the + and _ b+ voltages.  Also the small value resistors arounf the IC's

Not sure where is this + and - b voltages?? Is that the +22V and -22V going into the ICs? I have the service guide and schematic diagrams. On the D board schematic I see +22V and -22V to the ICs. Can you point to me where that is??
